The Sharqiya sands offer the romantic visitor desert in the accepted sense of the word. Rolling
sand dunes, varying from deep red to a rich honey color stretch as far as the eye can see.
Traditionally, this is the home of nomadic Bedouin tribes, hardy spirited people who know how
to survive in the inhospitable and tough terrain. Many of them have now settled in the towns
that border the Sands, but their "hearts" are still in the desert, and they will return there often.
Camels – the prized possessions of the Bedouin – roam freely. The Sands stretch for 180km
from north to south and 80km from east to west. They consist of grains of various eroded rock
and marine sediments blown into the area and there are many tracks through the sands without
signposts, so it is unlikely that you will follow the same route twice.
